About Di

Hi, I’m Di, photographer and owner of Di Watson Photography. I live in Mulgoa on the outskirts of Sydney with my pets, Labrador Matilda or Tilly as I call her, who more often than not travels on our camp trips with me, 2 cats and 2 budgies. This photo is of myself with my last Labrador Sophie.

I have made it a fantastic Outdoor Studio at Mulgoa on 2 acres, with an old shack, dam, old wagon, a truck, tractor and windmill, so lots of rustic stuff and lovely gardens. The props make a great setting for family portraits and wedding formal photo shoots. For more info on the Studio please have a look at Portrait Info

Photography for me started as a hobby and wasn’t something I chose as my career. I had decided on becoming a vet nurse due to my love of animals at high school. I still love my vet nursing and work one day a week at the surgery in Penrith where I’ve been for over 30 years. It’s a little difficult to give up something you love.

Photography has been a major part of my life for the last 25 years after friends started asking me to photograph their weddings as they liked the style of what I captured from behind the lens with my 1st camera (a Pentax K1000) that I purchased while working part time in a photographic shop when I was 18.

I have been in business in Penrith with my photography for 25 years this year, and still love shooting weddings & portraits! I have travelled to Fiji, Hamilton Island, Tasmania & Melbourne to photograph wedding for clients.

I love all aspects of my photography and enjoy running my own business. I am proud of the fact that with no formal training as a photographer and business owner, I have developed my own style and skills which have all my couples and families feeling very comfortable with the camera.

It’s often a 7 day a week business, working from home is great but often has long days in the office, depending on wedding and portrait commitments, seeing new clients and organising my nature and landscape work which is for sale at affordable prices in canvas and print. I use and love my Nikon camera’s and recently bought a Fuji compact camera with a great panoramic feature and a 700m lens, great for the handbag to capture a pic at anytime.

My goal in photography is to capture the beauty that is life, whether it’s my weddings which I love the joy and emotion of the day, portrait shoots are so much fun as you really don’t plan all the shots and just let the sitting flow.

People often ask at weddings how long have I been friends with the bride and groom as I blend in as much as possible with the guests with my friendly and fun personality, and I feel that the couples are my friends anyway. It’s such a privilege that I’m able to share in their special day and also enjoy sharing the excitement as their family grows and they have me shoot their family portraits.

While working to grow professionally I always stay true to my style by photographing from the heart. With an artistic eye and a passion for capturing beautiful relaxed images, each day is different being a photographer.

The emotions we see as we travel through life can be captured through the lens in many different styles and angles, and the same image may look totally different a few minutes later due to light or circumstance. Sunsets can change by the minute with all the colours in the sky, light glorifies everything. Clouds can change a picture immensely so no two sunrises or sunsets will ever be the same!

We live in an amazing country with so much beauty and diversity in the land, the wildlife and people. I especially love the outback and the country, it’s a wonderful area of Australia that a lot of us don’t get to experience. The people you meet are a highlight, so warm & friendly & full of character.

Visit my online gallery where I have over 2500 images of my travels throughout Australia, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, Romania and Fiji for sale.

I love travelling and exploring our beautiful country as often as time and our work commitments allows, the freedom of packing the caravan or swag and Tilly is a great way to relax though I’m usually up for sunrise every morning wherever I am. That’s what photographers do!!

In April 2010 while trekking about in outback New South Wales staying at some farms and stations the thought of a new business idea to design and market a website called Farmstay Australia to promote Farmstays & Stationstays for accommodation & camping. It’s growing in size every week.

So my life is busy and I love every second of it, whether it is my weddings and portraits or trekking about some country roads looking for inspiration.

Enjoy browsing my website & galleries.

Take care, Di  xx
